I am really curious about something I heard on podcast #30. I even sent a tweet to Sir Jocko. In this podcast it was said "If you can't conceal carry then get a knife and learn how to use it."
I used to carry a knife and never had to use it. I am grateful I never had an incident because for one I don't know how to properly use it, and on top of that I never bothered to look into all the legal issues involved. It was only in the process of looking into concealed carry did I understand all the ins and outs of lethal force as far as a court is concerned.
Now that the legal side of my duty to understand carrying a knife or gun has been satisfied I am very curious about peoples thoughts on knife training. I have seen many videos and demonstrations that were absolutely ridiculous. It does not take a trained eye or a sharp mind to see how a tremendous amount of "knife fighting" videos are absolute garbage. I believe there is one on YouTube were a guy is standing in a doorway and taking out a column of men armed with sub-machine guns one by one with his KNIFE!
If there any effective , practical, and fantasy free knife training? Are knives really practical ? I have heard it suggested that it is better to skip a knife, and if you can't have a gun then get pepper spray. Any truth to this?
Thanks to Jocko and Echo, and the board Mods.
Jon

Good question... I'm sure there is some good knife training out there. But what I would think is as equally important to learn is basic human anatomy. By learning anatomy, you will learn the best places to stick the knife.
Just my thoughts...

I took a knife fighting class back in 2014 and the main thing I got out of it was that I never want to be in a knife vs knife fight. We sparred and both me and my opponent were left with marks all over us. We had hard plastic knives with chalk and were marked up head to toe.

Hey snuggles, This might interest you, it put a lot of knife-fighting stuff into perspective for me (not that I'm an expert or anything): www.ucw.cz/~jerome/folsom.pdf The book's a classic, actually. There certainly is a lot of BS out there, including training. I've trained at a place where it was all wide swings and figure-of-eights with a knife, very telegraphic, just perfect for allowing your opponent to do a fancy little technique to disarm you. I think violent encounters with a knife go down differently. - Dude

I've been training Krav for a couple years and knife fighting is an area we cover. Long story short, if you're facing off with someone who has a knife expect to get cut. There's no way around it.
Now for you carrying a knife on your person. It's important to know the law in your state. Also some other stuff to think about: can you get to it quickly and covertly so a threat couldn't detect it, are you going to be okay with the mess that comes from stabbing someone, are you squeamish at all, and so on.
I carry a small blade but am looking to get a CCW permit next year.

I second what "Hellhoundsonmytrail" said. I also take Krav Maga (Krav Maga San Diego). This form of self-defense will teach you hand to hand combat as well as weapons. All of this is dependent on what level you are but if you stick with it, you will eventually have a very well-rounded self-defense knowledge/skill base. I also agree that it is important to be very familiar with the laws in your state/county/city. In California they make it very difficult for someone to properly defend themselves. You don't want to end up the criminal when all you want to do is defend yourself. Good Luck and "Get After It!"

Imho, a punch knife like the SOB G10 is very effective and only requires the ability to punch.
If your in a knife fight the chances of getting cut is high, best option if your unarmed is to use the Nike method(run), if that isn't a option, then gaining control of the bad guys blade arm at the wrist or arm and control him to the ground, then run.
