Am I doomed? Should I give up the pursuit? The situation is I am flat broke, and don't have access to a proper gym, or anyone with real knowledge on the subject. What I do have, is some determination, regular workout equipment, and a desire to learn. Any ideas and or comments?

First of all, no cash doesn't mean no gym. Find a place that does have classes. BE HONEST. You want to learn. You were wondering if there was a way you could take a few classes. If you could continue classes in exchange for cleaning the floor, lockers, Putting up flyers, working on their website, but something you will actually do, to a getting paid for it quality.
For stuff you can do. Bridges, Push ups, sit ups, Burpees, Flutter kicks. Plank. Also, be creative. Put an add on Craigslist, saying beginner looking for a training partner for B Jiu Jitsu.

Mynewunit is spot on! I was/am experiencing a similar problem. I am stuck at work on multiple 24 hr shifts. I cannot train regularly at a gym which meant I was missing training in a meaningful progression. I turned to the Gracie Academy and it kept me engaged. They also have the Gracie Garage training system which is designed to train with others at no cost.
Good Luck, Admin

BJJ continues to explode and grow, the chances of you having no options are shrinking. Watch youtube, tons of free content. Make a grappling dummy. Save $$$. If you have time, you can earn more and save. Get your butt to some classes or a seminar. Most of this stuff will only "click" in your mind once you feel it lock in, or feel it locked in on you.

Sounds like time for you get acquainted with Kelly Starrett Mobility WOD Twitter and coach Chris Sommer Gymnastic Bodies Twitter You can find both of these guys on podcasts with Tim Ferris and the Art of Manliness. These guys are big into body preparation and maintenance. Get you body (Joints) fixed and injury resistant. Then start rolling. The increase in mobility and flexibility and core strength will help your rolling. Being hurt doesn't mean you cant get better, but it might mean you need a break from rolling. Mine wasn't my shoulders. It was my sacroiliac. Got all my lifts up and took a break from the gym (for like 2 months). Tweaked my back and then had to do months of back, abdominal and hip mobility stuff to loosen up my hamstrings. Now I can squat deeper and take a lot more punishment. It will take a bunch of movements that don't "feel" like they are doing anything, and it will take longer than you think it should. (Assuming you are over 30 like I am).
