Hello Jocko, hello Echo, hello everyone on the board,
I am 41 years old and from Germany. I started martial arts as a kid (7 years old) and was very competitive at it, especially Judo. I was also into everything outdoors - from rock climbing to water sports, swimming, hiking, biking, survival training in any environments, and so forth ...
So when it was time to join the military (when I was 19 at that time, males still where required to perform basic military services in Germany), my climbing buddy and myself went to the selection / evaluation process. While I was in peak physical condition and also my academic performance was quite well (good high school diploma with main subjects in english, geography and physics), I was only evaluated T3 (T1 being the best), because of color vision defects ...
I was quite devastated at the time - my buddy went straight to high mountain infantry, which is considered a specialized unit in the german military at that time and he later on served in Afghanistan as a sniper/scout and medic - while my options with the military were quite limited. So I decided to skip military services completely, did the then required alternative national service at a hospital, where I worked at the emergency room (which turned out to also be an experience enhancing decision). Nevertheless, this all haunted me my whole life, and there is still that lingering regret, ...
When I heard about the same situation from others on your podcasts, this finally allowed me to revise it all and finally let it go ... thanks a lot for that insight. It just wasn't my path ... Yet, I did choose the path of the warrior and try to uphold that ethos in everything I do in my life. I am today a practitioner of BJJ and other martial arts and an entrepreneur in all kinds of endeavors ...
I wanted to say thank you for your wonderful books and the insightful podcast!
(When) will there be a german translation of the kids books? I need it for my 9 year old daughter! If you don't do it, I will eventually translate it
Also, if you ever come to Germany and need a mat to roll ... It would be an honor.
Keep up everything you do - and all the best from Europe - you have a LOT of fans here as well !!
Sebastian
