I've been doing BJJ for about 4 months now. I started at the dojo where I do Bujinkan because I have an unlimited membership. Anyways it's a fairly informal group and we only train once a week. Anyways about 3 weeks ago I started doing another class in addition because BJJ is fun. I'm pretty heavy, I'm 5'4 and weigh around 180lbs, and I tend to use that when I roll. I don't really use strength over technique, but if I get on top of someone I'll park there for a while and make them uncomfortable while I figure out what options I have or just see how my opponent reacts to various things. Anyways at the new place I've had a few remarks like "You're really heavy" or "You know how to throw your weight around" from other students. I'm just not sure if this is coming from a place of them saying I should do that less. I don't see why I should, it's an advantage I have so why not use it?

BJJ is meant to be using yourself to your advantage. Every professor of BJJ would tell you that your technique should always trump your strength or physical advantage. If you have done a good job using your weight as a technique, now try to not use it in training. Now use your lightness.

I'm not really relying on my strength or weight, that's one of the first things my instructor taught me not to do (through a few very 'practical' demonstrations, i.e. he's smaller than me and was pretty much just rolling around me), but I see what you mean, I also noticed this last night where there was a guy who was significantly heavier than me at our class (usually I'm the heaviest) so I had to rely on technique a lot more.

I have a guy in my gym who deadlifts 400. I weigh 200, so he lifts me like I'm made of polystyrene. That one guy taught me how powerful framing is.

I am a 48 year old blue belt woman...
This is so funny to me because most of the guys I rolled with are much heavier than you and higher belt than me! Imagine rolling with a 315 football player!! And this is why I make sure I lift...so I can do standing guard escapes and deadlift all y'all!!
