Hello all, I recently left a graduate school program in medical physics after spending almost six years in undergrad and graduate studies. There are multiple reasons I left, which I won’t get into. I know there’s almost a fetishization of never giving up in a lot of circles, but I wanted to bring up the idea that when things are FUBAR, when there is very little value that will come from the mission, sometimes it’s best to retreat and save our crew and our time, and replan in a more effective way. What does everyone think?

Never quit doesn't mean you can't change your objective. I have a lot of friends who did a bunch of school and then realized that the job they earned wasn't the job they wanted. I think Peter Attia MD is a good example. The was a math focused guy who saw the smartest around him go into medicine, so he went into medicine. The smartest in medicine went into surgery, and the best of those went into trauma. After a few years, he left medicine and went to a brain trust where he did mathematical modelling of debt failure before Lehman brothers and the mortgage crisis. Then he got interested in car racing, longevity, cycling, open water swimming, which leads him to his current practice. He is specializing in human longevity. It is a mix of medicine, risk, statistics, science, diet, exercise and behavior. He has never quit, but he has changed his focus many times. The schooling has value. Like Jocko says, when you know the path, you will see it in all things. You will be able to use your knowledge in many aspects of life. Don't get hung up on your job matching your degree. You could easily become a super high level fitness trainer, business consultant, Emergency medic, or whatever you want. I have said no to a desk job that was a perfect match. Sometimes the risky path is the easiest travelled. If you are compelled to take the unknown path, it is probably the right one.
