I just wanted to say Hello.
I started a journal back in August. It was an attempt to kind of empty my mind of all the thoughts that were consuming me. My first entry on August 15th started with these two sentences "I have a problem. I lack discipline."
Since then I have tried, failed, tried again, failed, got discouraged, got motivated, tried, and failed. It has been a journey of great days and bad days. The objective has been to establish discipline and I honestly could not understand why I couldn't get a hold of this simple idea of discipline. I had listened to a Jocko podcast and liked what I heard but honestly it didn't stick. For some reason I decided why don't I just start from the first episode and see if I could pick something up. Discipline = Freedom. I saw that before listening to the podcasts. That made a big impact on me. What I have been striving for was now staring me down. After the first couple of episodes I decided well hell I guess its time to try again. I bought extreme ownership yesterday.
I am not the type that really goes on forums but I do believe in surrounding yourself with people who exemplify the type of person you would like to be. So here I am ready to contribute and most of all ready to learn from others.
quick info about myself. I am 27 I am an EMT in Los Angeles County. Life has been a motherfucker (excuse my language) but it has taught me a lot. I hope to see you all around this forum and engage in good conversations.

Welcome to the boards, Felipe. Your past doesn't have to dictate your future. Building discipline is hard. The good news is that there is no step too small. Journaling is a great step. Next I would add something more physical. Try 10 push ups a day. Once you do that for a month, add more. Go back and read some of your journals. See if you have grown or changed in 3 months.
Next, surrounding yourself with good people. The Jocko community is full of people who are on the path, but it would be better to have a good influence you can actually see in real life, than a great resource online. So be looking. There are a lot of troopers in LA and the surrounding areas. There is probably someone close in your department. Try to find one and ask him to mentor you. And if all of that fails. I will.

Thanks for the kind words and advice. The physical aspect is something I am lacking. I use to be a collegiate division I athlete and let myself go hard and trying to come back is something that was a lot harder than I ever though would be. Its funny you posted the push up idea because thats exactly whatI started doing. It is nice to have the idea reaffirmed. Looking forward to future talks. Have a good one.
