Dear Jocko and Echo,
Im a 19 year old guy who has just gotten into BJJ. I wrestled in high school and did 6 years of Krav Maga before I started rolling with the gym I am at now. I'm a really competitive guy, I go to a military college and will be going into the Navy EOD pipeline upon graduation. When I wrestled in high school our practices were long and grueling, we would go live for sometimes 3 hours a day. The by-product of this is that I am in extremely good shape and do not tire easily, but now it is beginning to have unforeseen consequences at my new gym. At my new gym our classes are only an hour long and we only spar for about the last 15 minutes. Through my Krav experience I've learned to match whatever speed and intensity partner is going at to not only have fun rolling but to learn. Recently a purple belt instructor has been telling me I need to chill out when I spar. This was the first time I had been told to do this so I took it to heart and toned down my intensity level. Over the coming days he has been telling me to chill all the time to the point that he only lets me roll with colored belts. I promise you that I am only using 1/10 of my strength and speed on my partners and the purple belt still tells me to calm down. Right now I am just trying to work my moves and not get submitted, but I feel as if I am being criticized to the point that it is all I think about when I roll. I know white belts have a reputation to be overly aggressive and to hard in the beginning because they don't know the technique but I really am trying to just work technique. I've never had any of my partners (guys or girls) complain that I am going too hard. I've even rolled with 13 year olds that tell me im a great partner because I let them work there technique. I've tried having a one on one with this purple belt and asked him what I needed to do and he always tells me to just "be chill" and "calm down" when in reality im calm enough to read a book when I roll. I need more information and advice than "be chill" to work through this problem, do you have any advice?
