I'm glad we have a forum now. I was introduced to Jocko through the Joe Rogan and Tim Ferris podcasts but he resonates with me because he reminds me of my childhood. My father spent almost 20 years in the military. I was born on an army base and listening to Jocko is like listening to everyone I knew before I was 10. He says the things my dad used to say. It's comforting and I respect it. I currently fill a leadership roll I don't care for, I often wonder how the Hell I got here, and I certainly question why I stay but guys like Jocko serve to remind me about discipline and dedication IRL. I joke a lot about the things I want to do (like writing or riding my bicycle) and the things I have to do (like keeping my boss' company running or helping my kid through college) but honestly someone like Jocko is a helpful baseline when I'm not sure what I have to do. To put a melodramatic point on it, yesterday a guy collapsed in one of my shops. We thought he'd had a stroke but it turns out he had a brain tumor. Now I have a couple dozen guys worried about the idea that they could drop dead at work one day for no reason with no warning. What am I worried about? How to get his job and mine done without interrupting anyone else and without going into overtime. To lighten the mood I'll point out I quit sugar & simple carbs 7 months ago and went full keto 3 months ago and I've never felt better or stronger. Strong enough to quit. That should be a topic.

Norris, Welcome to the boards. First, let me compliment you on the Good Shirt snake tweet. The reflection and fear are natural response to an event like this. Your 2 questions. What am I worried about? You are worried about life. Work, family, Legacy. Who is you circle of influence? Who is your mentor? What is your mission? What is your goal? Focus brings clarity. How to get his job and mine done without interrupting anyone else and without going into overtime? The answer is that you don't. Talk up the chain of command and let them know that there will be difficulties taking up the slack. Giving them a reasonable concession like an extra half hour a day that you will do for free to help out. Let them know what deadlines will be delayed or ask them what they would put at the bottom of the to do list. Then go down the chain of command. With those who are equal or below you let them know that you need help. Let others step up and help fill the gap. I bet you can get more work done with an honest conversation and 3 pizza's than a heavy hand and "Everyone has to pick up the Slack".
PS. What do you charge for digital rights to your photo's?

First of all, forgive me for taking a few days to reply. My kid has been in town and I've been preoccupied with family stuff. http://instagram.com/p/BDd_TYYLC_5 mynewunit, Thanks for addressing my questions. I've been at my job for along time but I often find myself wondering how someone else would deal with my problems or make my decisions. Perspective is the currency of the realm. Finally, I am a bit of an old skewl pirate so karmic-ly speaking, I can't charge for my images, but if you want to use one of my snake pics I'd appreciate if you'd link to my website where ever possible (see below). I really spend the last decade combing North East Texas, catching rat snakes and selectively breeding to get a unique morph I could be proud of. There's no real money to be made with a rat snake morph right now because they are high strung snakes that strike a lot but I am starting to breed for behavioral traits as well as colors. It's what I do with all the time I spend not having a girl friend. www.cadmiumtxratsnakes.com/

Good to have some family time. I have a web site and I hate using junk stock photos. Most of my picks are just around my house. I am a mechanical engineer who loves fabrication. Obviously, you have an eye for mechanical drawing and fabrication. I like your shots of things like insulators and rusted tanks.

Design and fabrication has been my primary job for almost 20 years now. I started with autocad 13 and have slowly taught myself up to solid modeling. While, I have no formal engineering training, I built the building I work in and the desk I sit at, as well as most of the machines that continue to make my boss wealthy (I know, I should own that). I spend most of my time right now as production manager but since our business is primarily oil & gas related I find myself with a normal 40 hour per week job and time to mess about on the internet. I really don't care if you use my pics but give me credit where you can and if you accidentally get rich I accept payment in meat, bullets, bourbon and cigars. Quick side note: the rusted tanks you mentioned are actually pylons for an old railroad bridge. I like them because they were hand rolled and hot riveted before we had a president with polio and an interstate highway system. Heating up steel and beating it into shape with a hammer should be a right of passage like catching your own free-range protein or sharpening something you later use to get out of a bad situation. What can I say? I'm nostalgic for old steel.
