Having dabbled in grappling while overseas, I have finally decided to take BJJ formally. I will be buying my first GI, (origin duh). My question is “would I been seen presumptuous buying a blue or black GI as a white belt?” I am all ready swallowing my pride going into a beginner class, which is where I truly belong. Just don’t want to stroll in looking like a turd.

The Gi color doesn't matter. I am with you that anything that isn't white is better. The beginner class is going to be a lot of new gi's. As long as you aren't in the cheapest amazon one you will be fine. You are years away from a belt that will clash with black or blue. It will show you aren't one of the sheep that just bought the gi from the dojo. Enjoy. Use all the old tricks for looking like you belong. Get there early. Learn at least 1 guy's name. Always get in the back of the line, watch everyone in front of you.

I have dark gis for the other martial art I do (Bujinkan), never really gotten issues for it. I don't think I'd like to train at a place where gi color matters.
