Welcome to the boards. Not having a "Dad" can mess us up in lots of ways. Getting to something difficult and changing yourself to fix it is a skill not easily learned and works every time it is tried.
So Awesome that you have a near by "trooper". Friends getting their life together is a big help in getting your life together. Lastly, your jiu jitsu professor probably knows things about you that you don't even know. They may not know your history, but he will know that you are on the way up.
