Managing your transition and career

Hello all.  I'm happy to be here with others that are looking to grow and improve their lives.

We are building an online platform to help people manage their careers including tools to help in their job search.  I am interested in hearing your stories and challenges in finding a job and taking charge of your career growth.

I am particularly interested in learning what specific challenges are faced by those who are transitioning from the military into the private sector.  I know there are a different set of issues faced by those entering the workforce and I'm hoping to be able to build specific tools to help those facing a career change from the military.

Welcome to the boards. I think you might want to create life cycles of various careers. I think a big help is to show how long things take and where you start.

Thanks for the excellent suggestion. We are working on a couple of tools including a skills matrix which will allow you to compare your current skills to what is required of other positions or careers so you can see what areas to focus on, a breakdown of careers and whether specific areas are on the rise or decline, and a goals board where you can refine your thinking about what you are actually doing all this for.

We are also creating a community so those who are trying to find their path in a certain career can talk to someone in that career and learn what they need to succeed. Once we have the beta in place, I'll reach out again to see if we have built something that helps. In the meantime, I'll be soaking up more of this great content and using these lessons to help others in killing it in their career.

Hello to you too. As a guy considering retiring after 21 years in the Air Force I'm interested in what you're discussing. I've just PCS'd so I will be on the hook for 2 .5 more years of AD but it is time to line up career 2.0.

Approaching 40 looking for a new line of work, try technical sales. Maybe Lockheed, BAE systems, Boeing. Those companies like guys who travel and speak turbines. There is probably an office for each of those companies on your base. Most guys can't handle the swing from the regular pay of the military to commission of sales. Glad you are thinking about this more than a year out. Start talking with others. Once other know you are looking, people will start dropping invitation.
