Ex-Army tabbed Ranger, got out in 2006 to live to soft life, got married, slowly lost any form of hard charging self I had in me. After 10 years of marriage, we split because my job running a military charity was my mistress. But much like when Jocko talks about having a wife who is not on board to the "SEAL life", she was just not understanding where I was coming from with my organization (Stack-Up.org, supporting veterans with video gaming). Turns out my divorcing my wife was the kick in the ass she needed to get her life on track, but I was out flapping on my own.
I listened to Jocko's audiobook for Extreme Ownership, enjoyed it, but put it away in my mental kitbag, not thinking anything of it and moved to the next audiobook. Then a colleague of mine told me about the podcast, so I figured it was worth a try.
Jesus.
Let's just say I'm contemplating a move to San Diego to be close to Victory MMA. Sure, it was only 15-20 minutes of considering it, as I'm planning a move to the West coast by the end of the year, but as I'm moving up to LA, I'm now scouting out boxing and BJJ gyms near where I live as a qualifier for places to live. Started BJJ last month despite absolute terror of injury, and am now looking for a boxing gym within decent drive to where I'm at to see if I can split up my workouts.
But the motivation! I'm on yet another business trip for the charity, and instead of hiding up in the hotel, ordering a pizza, and working on my laptop, I went out of my way to find a local boxing gym that was offering "first class free" deal and went. That's insane for me. Then today, the 4th of July, borrowed my brother's pass to Planet Fitness and went down there to try my hand at a back workout/pullups. I'm not sure where this is coming from, but...it's changing my life.
I don't know if anyone is on this thing still (I'm kind of surprised there aren't more people chatting it up here), but figured I can't be the only SOB out there who's trying to get his life in order and listening to Echo and Jocko growling in their ears is the motivation I needed.
