I've been applying "Good" as soon as I learned about it. I love the side benefit that not only does it immediately shift your own immediate response to adversity but its usage becomes contagious within the team. I find that my crew has started leading with "Well, we had an issue.... but its good" Anyways, I was puzzling over why it really works. Most folks approach emotions like the weather - i.e. they happen to us. It strikes me that Jocko through his experiences figured out this isn't entirely true. What is more interesting is there is psychological research into this very topic and the very solid podcast "Invisibilia" has a two part series on emotions which covers this very topic. It really connected some dots for me on why the simplicity of "Good" has some depth as to *why* it works in terms of how emotions actually happen. So, when Jocko says tautologys like "If you want to work out more, work out more..." its plumbing some deep water about how we function.
