Listening to this episode about leadership and honesty brought me back to the Corps. A few things I wanted to note:
1. Pertaining to "My Marines" or as the example in the episode stated, "my parade deck", I agree that this can be a positive or negative connotation based on the listeners perception of how the speaker uses the phrase. One point of note that jumped out at me when I was listening was the honor and the responsibility placed on you as a leader when you heard one of your Marines refer to you as "my SSgt". That subtle nuance is huge when you earn it. You are no longer "Cpl Smucatelli", you are "my corporal". Subtle difference but a huge distinction.
2. One thing that always stuck with me was my Sgt (yep, my Sgt, not just Sgt Brown) told me just after I pinned on Corporal was "Never put yourself in a position for your integrity to be questioned". I carried this with me and still do. Transperancy takes you a long way, and owning your mistakes gets you not only respect, but trust both up and down the chain of command.
Thanks for the podcast, I just discovered it and I'm loving every minute.

being in a small specialized unit that were not lead by officers in the field..we almost always addressed each team member by there first name...there were a few exceptions like if a 03 or higher was present in the rear..
This mainly was my experience in units that required some type of selection process designed to weed out the unqualified ...SF Q-course, LRSU selection etc...
I found the units that used selection phases for acceptence developed a faster bond and intra Team respect for every team member regardles of rank...so a more open minded decision process to mission planning down to who wants what for chow..
Contrary to line Infantry units where rank was adhered to in the majority most situations...and many leaders led by rank ..w

Agreed. Even in civilian organizations we have similar nuance in ownership vs possession. It is common to say "Send it to Structural, or Processing" or ask "Who is your electrical engineer". Jocko did a bunch to clarify the Mindset aspect of the reference. Much of the formalities are intended for larger structures. No one in my company thinks of the CEO as Steve, but our team of 10 all think of our leaders as Doug and Matt.
