Okay. I have cracked this book. First chapter. Building the characters mid story. As best I can tell, if you name starts with an M or a T you are a male, and if your name starts with an A or O you are a female. Chapter 1 - Done. 44 weeks till the Jocko Mushashi Podcast.

I've just recently learned about this book and want to read it, but sometimes I find that there are pieces of literature (and sometimes films) that would have been better served with a little research ahead of time. Has anyone else read this book that can offer some topics to cover before cracking the cover?

There are lots of references to Feudal systems. I can put together a "cast" to help you understand who they are as you come across them. If you have a superficial understanding of Zen, Buddhism, Japanese weapons, Culture. Also, some understanding of the Samurai structure, words like Shogun, Ronin, etc. I am about 250 pages in to the 900 pages. The story is more about the people, poor life choices, and what makes a good Samurai (solider, leader).

Maybe more of a reference point in history, because the feudal systems span almost 500 years (in my limited understanding). But what you are saying is that it is more about people and not historical context, then it may not be necessary to do that much pre-reading. And what you have replied already should be good enough after about an hour's worth of wikipedia "rabbit-holing". Thanks!
