A little FYI. This Episode rate a 10 on the Heavy Meter and the Darkness Meter. Not for Children or adults who get upset by facebook posts.

I understand that generational indoctrination contributed to the actions of the Japanese at Nankin, but is this can't be the only force driving these actions. How do humans get to that point?
Important heavy listening.

Dehumanization. If your enemy isn't human human, then they are objects. You might as well be breaking furniture. The real question is how do you get them to that point.

I thought so too, but a Japanese solider was quoted as saying "they were women when we were raping them, but nothing more than pigs afterwards"(Paraphrasing)
I'm not sure the mind is able to flip that switch so quickly. If they are able, how do you get there? I feel it's most likely a series of small progressions which snowballs. You are correct, the question is how do you get to that point?

Obviously we are looking at this from climate controlled living rooms with the knowledge of the ages readily accessible in our pocket. Actions were private then. Today something involving a dozen people will likely have video available and could end up on the national news.
Similarly, if you marry the girl of you dreams, someday she is just your room mate. The car you want becomes the grocery getter, commuter. The only way to stop that is Awareness, perspective, discipline. That requires oversight, mentors, moral authority, leadership, or a mirror.

Best podcast episode I've listened so far. I had difficulty finishing it tbh. Thank you so much for sharing the books, and your insights especially.

This is the first time that I have ever felt compelled to post on a message board. Episode #60 had that much of an effect on me. The missus and I are both academics, but I’m the weirdo in the couple. In addition to being a professor, I’m a veteran (USAF 89-93), Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Honduras 99-01), surfer and 45 year old BJJ brown belt. I firmly believe that one can be both ‘bookish’ and ‘a meat head’. So, naturally I found the Jocko Podcast as an absolutely wonderful invention from day one. Dr. Lee, on the other hand, shakes her head whenever I come home bruised, battered, and smiling. “What drives you to do this?”, she asks.
My wife is from Korea and had long told me of the Japanese atrocities in her home country. She is always pissed because the Japanese government still has not admitted any wrong doing to this day. We have Japanese friends (gov’ts are not the same as the people of a country) and they have never heard of the Korean incidents. None of those actions ever made it to the Japanese history books, just like with the Nanking rapes and murders. So, as a big fan of history and literature (as well as a fellow nerdy person who loves a good physical challenge), hats off to you two gentlemen for producing an incredible product. My wife has now become a fan as a result of Episode #60. So, out of that darkness you’ve spread some light. She now knows the meaning of ‘getting after it’ and a has a better understanding of my neurosis. You two can add ‘marriage fixer-upers” to your resumes. ☺

Lt. Col Dave Grossman's book "Psychological Effects of Combat" has an entire chapter about Atrocity ... I can't recommend his books enough, both that one and "On Combat" are outstanding works.
