I recently came across your podcast by sheer accident and, as it happens my own good luck. The first one I listened to was with John Stryker Myer where I immediately had to redirect to the first broadcast you gave with John. Those podcasts with John and with The Frenchman remain my favourites, perhaps because they were not only the first I listened too but also the inimitable Mr Myer's infectious personality.
As a veteran British soldier who served 14 years in a proud Scottish Regiment I find your content fascinating and inspiring. The soldiers you have interviewed are outstanding men of honour, pride and valour and I commend them all for their bravery in service of their country. I would also like to mention Mrs Iris Gardner for her own bravery in sharing her difficult story, it must be an inspiration to any woman, anywhere in the world who has listened to it and from a personal point of view I thank Iris for sharing her story, I found it both haunting and moving from a personal point as I was reminded of what my own Mother had to endure, I thank Iris for giving me an opportunity to touch base with my own emotions and gain another perspective, I am truly grateful.
I listened to the podcast with Mr James Webb the former Democratic Senator and, on realising he was THE author of Fields of Fire I was immediately transported back to the early 80's where I was with my platoon and we were training in preparation to go to the jungles of Central America. To a man we all read this book and comedically became the characters, or perhaps just characters of our own imagination to be more precise. I have fond memories of that time and that smudged, dog-eared, almost bindless paperback book. I also realised where I had seen Mr Webb before, not realising at the time he was the same person who authored that fantastic book. He did a documentary on the Ulster Scots, (Scotch/Irish to you guys), and his family ties to the Ulster Scots. I like to think that the Ulster Scots have played a huge part in American History, American Military and indeed the very fabric of American Democracy, perhaps in thanks for the freedoms given to us by America in the form of freedom to worship, own lands and the right for Americans to bear arms. I believe the battle of Kings Mountain where Mr Webb's ancestors fought, helped turn the tide of the Revolutionary War otherwise you all might just have been singing God Save The Queen! We Ulster Scots and Americans as a people Jocko are inexstricably linked, rooted in a melting pot of proud history where I believe The Blood of One Strengthens The Other!
So much I would like to say Jocko but I will just bore you, I thank you, I thank your guests and I thank the brilliantly patient, intelligent Echo for his humour, humility and outstanding interaction with you, I'm a fan for life. I hope one day you might delve deeper into the connections between our people in the military, the stories have it all, leadership, discipline, heroism, pride, humour and 'gettin the f**k after it"!
