I served as a Captain in the Oregon Guard 2003-2004 Balad Air Base. I left my job as an elementary school principal, and came back and continued in education. I cam back with pretty bad health problems, I believe from the burn pits. I started a project and service based alternative high school in 2014. We converted to charter October 2018. Our staff and board is committed to serving ALL kids, not just the rich and white. I heard Jocko talk about opening his own school in Podcast 37?. That would be awesome.
We are a small school of choice - 63 kids. We started a child care for teen moms. We allow students to design their program from the ground up - they tell us how they want to learn. As staff we try our best to also create engaging courses (Water Quality Testing, Workout Math, History Podcast, Wargaming). I am hoping to be able to get my school to its own site, and to get enough stability and funding in the bank to it before I can no longer work.
Jocko and Echo are simply amazing. I listen every morning before work. Jocko reminds me of the very best leaders I had in ROTC and the military. The podcast is so powerful, I recommend it to my grown sons, and my staff and students. It re-affirms for me that good is worth fighting for, even when all the chips are down. It kept me going last year when I was working 80-90 hours a week for months on end, writing charter plans, playing full time teacher, and principal, writing grants, etc. Many times I wanted to ask for milk and cookies, a warm blankie and to go full weak sauce. Had I not discovered the podcast, I may not have persevered.
Thank you Jocko, and Echo. You two are inspiring. I would love to show my school off to you, and help you get yours up and running!
