Currently working towards earning my bachelors degree and I am in a class about stoicism. We know that stoicism on the outside looks like control over ones emotions and discipline. One of the major tenets of stoicism is to not worry about things that are outside of your control or else it is harmful to ones being. In my understanding of Extreme Ownership it seems like everything is under your control (or you should at least have a say in the outcome). These two philosophies seem fundamentally opposite. Am I understanding this correctly? Are there any suggestions on how to weave both into your life?

I would say that you have a sophomoric view of extreme ownership. Extreme Ownership is more "internalize, don't externalize". It is very much a control what you can control, methodology. Adam Carolla says that the worst thing in the world is "not my fault". If it isn't your fault, you are damned to a life of what everyone else does to you. Extreme Ownership is that AS LEADERSHIP everything is in your control. You decide what to do and what not to do. If someone is stealing from your company, it is your fault. Obviously you didn't ask anyone to steal from your company. It is upon you as leadership to set the expectation that people don't steal from your company, monitor if anyone is stealing from your company and punish people who are stealing from your company. Stoicism would not say "If I am not stealing from my company, I cannot control it". It would say "The Obstacle is the Way".

I would refine EO down even more in everything is your responsibility. You may not be able control the weather, but it is your responsibility to have a contingency plan. EO and stoicism both focus on acceptance of hard truths, then move on to practical solutions.
