Good evening everyone I wanted to bring up this subject that I have been thinking on for some time now. What are the pros vs cons when it comes to audio books vs traditional reading. I use audio books more often but when I have time and or am reading older literature i will sometimes prefer traditional reading. I have always heard mixed things from people, but figured I'd list my pros and cons about both and see if anyone would like to give their thoughts.
Audio books Pros:
- Allows you to be complete books faster.
- Can be used as a substitute and or break from music on long road trips.
- Some audio books offer additional clarification on topics within the book from the author directly themselves.
- Multitasking becomes easier along with the ability to make time to knock out your personal reading list.
Audio books Cons:
- If you don't pay attention and monitor your focus you may miss key notes and or parts of the book.
- (To me this is the biggest one) Older texts can become very hard to digest due to them being from a different era.
- Building on the last Con translations can be of poor quality.
Traditional Reading Pros:
- Far better absorption of the material due to you putting more effort into focusing.
- Ability to highlight and or bookmark key portions of the text.
- Generally more relaxed environment and can even be therapeutic.
- Nearly an absolute most for advanced technical texts and or older literature.
Traditional Reading Cons:
- Multi tasking is nearly impossible.
- Not practical to carry multiple books around with you versus having digital audio books, unless you have a kindle.
- Inability to read while driving.
- Requires you to make time in your day versus having the ability to use audio books to work around your schedule.
Personally I like both and along with podcasts I think this is a very good thing that more and more people are listening to books and or podcasts. I also don't think it hurts authors because if the book is good enough people will buy the hard or soft cover version as well. I've actually done this a couple times that way I can highlight key sections and or read them more thoroughly. Was curious of everyone else's personal opinions on this subject and what everyone else prefers?
