My 9 year old took his first (trail) class and loved it. Budgeting to add 4 to 5 months of Jui Jitsu a year into his schedule I was considering gear - namely headgear. Not one kid in the class had one on. Why not? What brand/style would you recommend?

The reason you use head gear is to prevent cauliflower ear. When 9 year old kids roll there should be a lot of ear injuries. Mouth guards also save teeth more than stop concussions. If there is striking then think about the boxing style headgear. If you want to get a set, wrestling gear is good. I would only make this proportional to the cost of the classes. Good news is that the remainder of the parents in the class are not insane. Of the 40 other kids that are in the array BJJ classes with. I only remember 2 kids ever putting on head gear. I also don't think I ever saw an ear injury that would have been prevented by head gear. I wrestled with my brothers for a decade and I do have the smallest amount of ear injuries. And we tried to hurt each other.
