I was wondering what Jocko would say in regards to a problem I’m having. I’m 34 years old and just had a total hip replacement in December (long stupid story). What I’m wondering is is jiu jitsu out of the question? My mobility is actually pretty much the same in both hips, but the information on the issue is so across the board from hell no to absolutely yes, that I’m confused. I imagine the answer is just going to be do what you can do, but anything more definitive would be appreciated? Thanks

Good question. Talk to the instructor(s). Let them know you have had a hip replacement. Also let them know what kind of things are problematic. You might need a special mount escape. Joint replacements, normally you try to avoid large numbers of reps. So if warm ups are 100 unweighted squats, tell your instructor you will stop at 20. And for all BJJ injuries and limitations, it is most dependent on your training partner. For a little bit of understanding, try this trooper project podcast. They talk with a BJJ player with and interesting physical concern. Give it a shot. Trooper Project Kareem
