I’m the number 2 for my boss. He has all the qualities of a great leader. I want to be great at supporting him. I want to be particularly careful not to undermine him. Any tips for being a great #2?

Maybe you could buy him a book and read it too? Extreme Ownership by Jocko and Leif
First, Know your team. Guys tend to act differently with the boss than with their co workers. They may be more likely to tell you about their history, personal life and internal work frustrations. Get to know who gets there early, what everyone likes for work, who needs reminders.
Second, bring the team concerns and frustrations to your boss. Not tattling on who is misbehaving. When everyone hates a specific client, or the new time sheet software, let him know. You good leader will give you the WHY of that change or difficulty. Then either he or you can help inject that WHY into the discussions the team has. Example: Yeah, new time software isn't as fast as before, but it means that it interfaces with our billing software better. Besides, time sheets are a pain no matter what but they get us paid.
Third, Be a good team member. If you are in the bottom third of the team and close to the boss, you will look like a brown nose, or Yes Man. If you are one of the hardest workers, getting there before the "start" and staying through the "end" of the day. Help other team members, teach, share information and knowledge.
Another thing that seems to be a huge help is occasionally spending your own dollars on something like lunch, snacks, candy dish or the office coffee station. Don't be "Treats provided by #2" but when people mention the great bag of coffee or top shelf cream, you mention, "I brought that in. Let me know if you want something specific". Also let you boss know so he can do this too.
Leaders Eat Last. Take care of the men and they will take care of you. A good captain sleeps in a well made bed, A great captain sleeps in the mud with his troops. Great example is Dakota Meyer forced his "assistant/cameraman/editor" to take his first class seat while getting on a plane.
